In the 1960's, Roy Weatherby identified a market for a more economical alternative to the traditional rifle that could also accommodate his distinctive magnum cartridges. He embarked on the Vanguard project, leveraging the precise craftsmanship of his recent partner, Howa, to produce superior Mark V actions. This new venture began with a robust Howa two-lug push-feed action which incorporated key safety features such as a fully enclosed bolt and three gas ports. These features delivered unrivaled protection in case of ammo failure.
Further innovations included a hammer forged barrel offering unsurpassed accuracy and durability unseen in the mass-produced, cut-rifled barrels of that era. The addition of an M-16 style extractor ensured consistent, reliable cartridge extraction, while the inclusion of a fluted bolt body similar to the Mark V ensured smooth operation even in challenging hunting conditions. Combining these elements lead to the creation of a highly efficient push-feed system capable of handling Weatherby Magnums, all at a price accessible to a wider range of customers.
