The Desert Tech Wolverine (WLVRN)

What Is The Desert Tech WLVRN?

Desert Tech's WLVRN platform represents over a decade of research and development spent designing the perfect modern bullpup rifle. Taking cues from the original MDR (Micro Dynamic Rifle) and other iconic bullpups like the Steyr AUG A3 M1, the WLVRN is a sleek and compact firearm that is capable of firing intermediate or full-power rifle rounds.

Unlike previous bullpup designs from Desert Tech, the WLVRN also utilizes special monolithic-like construction with 49 fewer parts and a tighter barrel fit for a reputed 30% increase in accuracy. This lightweight, uber-reliable rifle platform is perhaps the most advanced modular bullpup on the market in 2024 and promises to match or even outperform competing models like the Springfield Hellion and the IWI Tavor 95.

The WLVRN is truly multi-caliber given that it is quick and easy to convert between large and short-frame calibers in the field. This means the WLVRN can be adapted to any mission objective as well as any shooter's individual preferences.

Features & Performance

At first glance, the WLVRN may not look that different from its predecessors, the MDR and the MDRX. Handling one for the first time is a different story though, as it is immediately apparent that the WLVRN is lighter and much more balanced. The controls are intuitive and the factory trigger is smooth and crisp, with a relatively short reset.

Both WLVRN rifles were remarkably low-recoiling, even when switching from an intermediate to a full-power rifle cartridge. Moreover, the lighter weight and bullpup configuration translated to less shooter fatigue throughout our range session. We also found the gas system and ejection port were easy to adjust with a simple tool, which reduced down time when transitioning from left to right-handed shooting or from suppressed to unsuppressed fire.

After getting a feel for the WLVRN, we conducted an accuracy test to compare the updated bullpup to Desert Tech's earlier variant, the MDRX. There was a noticeable increase in accuracy while shooting the WLVRN compared to the MDRX, with more consistent shot placement at 100 yards. Provided the shooter uses proper technique, this rifle is certainly capable of one MOA performance at mid-to-long range.

The WLVRN also ran more reliably, which is a testament to the enhanced design features and development that went into this updated model. Overall, the WLVRN bullpup rifle exceeded our expectations and was a pleasure to shoot (we may even pick one up for our own personal use).
