The Steyr AUG is one of the most iconic bullpup rifles in firearms history, with a proven service record and innumerable appearances in pop culture. Unfortunately, it doesn't take AR mags... but in some regards it may be even better than the battle-tested AR platform. What can be said about the AR platform that hasn't already been covered ad nauseam? It's a proven, reliable rifle available in a variety of calibers - including the venerable 5.56 NATO. Due to the AR-15's immense popularity, the accessories market is constantly evolving, bringing new and exciting products with which to build the perfect rifle.
Ammunition, magazines, and spare parts are readily available. This makes the AR-15 an ideal all-purpose gun that will essentially last for as long as the owner is willing to clean / take care of it.
By contrast, the Steyr AUG is more niche and has less aftermarket support in the U.S. The bullpup design was first adopted in 1977 and has seen extensive military service around the globe ever since.
It is also one of the most iconic firearms in existence, making appearances in countless video games as well as the beloved classic, Die Hard. The reason the AUG has endured in real life as well as in pop culture is because of its proven performance, compact size, ergonomic controls, and of course, its distinctive shape profile.
Both the AUG and the AR-15 have similar barrel lengths, but the AUG is more compact making it better suited for CQB. This is due to the AUG's bullpup configuration which allows for optimal ballistic performance in a shorter firearm. For this reason, the Steyr AUG is often regarded as one of the most accurate rifles out of the box.
Impressive firepower in a sleek, modular, supremely shootable package - that's what you get with the AUG. It's compelling enough that many are willing to navigate the relatively (at least compared to the AR-15) less diverse accessories market because all the pros simply outweigh this one con.
