Most new gun owners ask a variation of the same question: how often should you clean your gun? It’s a hotly debated topic in the firearms community, but the truth is that optimal cleaning and maintenance habits look different for every individual.
Here are just a few of the factors that affect when you should clean your gun to ensure it functions reliably:
As a general rule, modern firearms using modern ammunition do not necessarily need to be cleaned after each use. Some guns (like 1911s) may require more regular cleaning and lubrication and it is not recommended to let any gun sit dirty for more than a few months.
One caveat - maintenance standards of firearms designated for duty use or personal protection should be higher. Guns that are part of your everyday carry system should be kept in pristine working order because it is imperative that they function flawlessly every time.
In other words, if there is one firearm you clean every time you shoot a box of target loads, let it be your EDC pistol that may save your life in a self defense encounter.
