Top 6 Derringer Pistols

History:

The term "Derringer" derives from the simple single-shot pistol introduced by Henry Deringer in 1825 for his Philadelphia Deringer company. Its function differs from most common pistols as it is not a revolver or semi-automatic and features no moving action. The simplistic design of the pistol allows the overall size to be smaller and more concealable. The name gained infamy after being used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The current design, for most variants, in function is similar to over/under break-action breech loading shotguns. Current Derringer designs utilize a wide range of calibers, including traditional revolver, semi/fully automatic, and even shotgun rounds. Sometimes even in creative combinations. For these reasons, current Derringer designs can make excellent self-defense and backup weapon options. A few fun and current options are shown below:

Cobra Derringer w/ Pearl Grips

At .22LR, this is probably the most enjoyable caliber for this gun type if you are someone that plans on shooting it a lot at a gun range. This variation features sights for aiming, whereas some other options only feature a groove.

Cobra Derringer Big Bore Chrome w/ Pearl Grips

Here is an example of the caliber flexibility some variants of this platform offer. Traditionally, .380 ACP (as the ACP implies) has been used as a semi-automatic pistol round. Here it is used in a configuration where a rimmed cartridge would likely be more expected.

Cobra Derringer BigBore Rosewood Grips

This 9mm variant is a good choice because it is much more cost effective than the .380 ACP. This round offers more power than the variants previously shown, but is still small enough to be enjoyable to shoot often.

Inland ILMDER45 Liberator Derringer 45 ACP 3.5 2 Shot, Stainless

At 45 ACP, this is probably not the gun you want to be shooting a lot at the range. The smaller size and mass will mean more recoil. On the other hand, for concealment and self defense, this can be a great option.

Bond Arms Texan Derringer

This is an interesting option because .45 Long Colt isn't extremely common now, and seeing a shotgun round in a pistol isn't very common either. The added barrel length and weight will make it more comfortable to shoot.

This is an interesting design that utilizes the rimfire nature of the .22 LR cartridge by using a rotating firing pin. A lack of traditional sights help to make sure it doesn't catch or snag when pulled out. Shop All Derringers
