Zastava ZPAP M72: A Superb Serbian RPK Rifle

The ZPAP M72: A New Semi-Auto RPK From Zastava

Kalashnikov's RPK can best be described as a bigger, badder version ot the AK-47 rifle. Like the AK-47, it is chambered in 7.62x39 and is a gas-operated closed bolt firearm. The RPK also introduced a number of enhancements to improve accuracy, range, and durability during sustained automatic fire - including a longer barrel and a threaded barrel for muzzle devices.

Additionally, the RPK light machine gun includes several external features to aid the shooter in combat. The standard AK-pattern wood stock is replaced with a distinctive angular stock for firing while in a prone or fixed position. And for increased control and stability, each gun ships with an integral metal bipod installed from the factory.

Enter The ZPAP M72 Rifle

Zastava is the latest manufacturer to announce an updated RPK variant retaining these design elements in a modern, semi-auto rifle. Slated for release later this year, the ZPAP M72 is built on an M70 receiver with a heavy barrel and cooling fins, as well as an adjustable sight. These additions allow for longer, more comfortable shooting sessions by reducing heat buildup and felt recoil.

On the left side of the receiver, Zastava has included a rail mount for optics and scopes. The rifle utilizes standard AK-pattern magazines, including the 75-round drum mag that is commonly associated with the full-auto RPK light machine gun. With the bipod deployed, this rifle looks gorgeous and handles just the way an AK-pattern rifle should.

First Impressions

As we've come to expect from Zastava, the ZPAP M72 is yet another excellent reproduction of a famous and battle-proven weapons system used around the world. The build quality is on point and it is clearly evident that the company took their time in adapting the RPK for the civilian market. We can't wait to put some rounds down range, but we're even more excited for Zastava to release a gold model (hint hint).
