Short, maneuverable pump actions like the Mossberg Shockwave or the Remington Tac 14 may fire shotshells, but they have a few characteristics which legally distinguish them from shotguns. Today, we're discussing the many uses for these shorty 12GA firearms and why you might want to own one.
Many of today's most popular pump action and semi-auto shotguns are chambered in 12GA, but did you know that some 12GA firearms are not technically considered shotguns even if they fire shotshells? These short, stout guns typically have a birdshead or pistol grip and are classed as AOWs (Any Other Weapons) by the federal government.
Essentially, this classification applies to any firearm chambered in 12GA (or another, less popular gauge of shotshell) that is designed to be fired one-handed. An AOW of this type also features a smooth bore, a barrel length under 18 inches, and may not be modified with a stock or other assistive device which allows it to be fired from the shoulder.
An AOW chambered in 12GA does not fall under the legal definition of a short-barreled shotgun, so you aren't required to fill out a Form 1 or pay an NFA tax stamp before you can legally own one. In most states, anyone age 21 or older can simply purchase these firearms just as they would any rifle, shotgun, or handgun.
Within the context of personal protection and home defense, there are several reasons you might consider running a shorty 12GA firearm instead of a pistol, rifle, or shotgun. They provide excellent stopping power and can fire a variety of different defensive shotshells, plus, a pump action AOW can be used with minimal knowledge or training.
But the primary benefit of a shorty 12GA is definitely its maneuverability in close quarters environments. In a narrow hallway or the cramped interior of your vehicle, you may not have enough space to properly shoulder a weapon and even if you could, transitioning between targets would cost precious seconds you may not have when faced with a deadly threat.
On the other hand, a shorty 12GA firearm points instinctively and allows for rapid deployment in situations where drawing a concealed handgun may be difficult or impossible (i.e. you're not wearing your holster). These guns also minimize your risk of exposure when crossing thresholds because you're less likely to lead with your barrel, as there is less barrel to lead with.
Better maneuverability also translates to better retention, which makes it significantly more difficult for an attacker to wrestle the firearm from your hands should you find yourself in a scuffle.Simply put, a pump action AOW offers tremendous utility in confined spaces and is an excellent choice for home defense or use as a truck gun.
