Pump action shotguns evoke a sense of nostalgia accompanied by the classic "Chk Chk" of racking in a load, but does that alone make them better than their semi-auto contemporaries? In this blog, we will discuss the pros and cons of each shotgun action and determine whether one is superior to the other.
When it comes to shotguns, many shooters have differing opinions about whether pump actions or semi-autos are more reliable. Some think that because shotshells can vary widely, not all ammunition types will cycle effectively in a gas-driven platform. Individuals in this camp favor the manual operation of a pump action because it is theoretically less likely to fail.
Others argue that firearms technology has evolved to the point that there isn't any need for concern, as many models feature an adjustable gas system for firing different loads. To these shooters, the ease of use and rapid fire rate of semi-auto shotguns far outweigh any perceived drawbacks. Thus, semi-autos are just as reliable as pump actions while also being more effective.
Individual preferences aside, each type of action has clear pros and cons that must be weighed to determine whether pump action or semi-auto shotguns are more advantageous. The Classic Firearms team is going to lay out our case for both before giving you the final verdict.
Pump action shotguns have endured because they are easy to pick up and shoot with minimal training. The average user can likely operate a pump action efficiently enough to deter a threat, even if they won't be winning any 3-gun matches. For this reason, they are frequently recommended to new shooters looking for a defensive firearm.
Many modern semi-auto shotguns feature an adjustable gas system and offer a high degree of versatility. When properly broken in, they will cycle a variety of shotshell ammunition without issue. It could also be argued that semi-autos are even more accessible to shooters because there are fewer mechanical parts to manipulate, simply point and shoot.
Ease of use, customization, and modular design elements give semi-auto shotguns the edge. That's not to say that pump actions are bad, or even that semi-autos are better by a wide margin. However, with the advancement of firearms technology, there isn't any reason not to run a semi-auto shotgun for self-defense because the advantages far outweigh potential drawbacks.
As with most firearms, avoiding catastrophic failures is often as simple as purchasing quality products and maintaining your shotgun with the proper care. And for those who aren't convinced or who just prefer the feel of a traditional pump, there are several semi-auto shotguns that can also be fired in pump action (like the Dickinson Ermox Hybrid 12GA).
