Purchasing a suppressor has never been easier than it is in 2024, with convenient e-filing allowing for an average of just 5-7 days for your NFA paperwork to be processed and approved. In this blog, we're sharing how you can shop for a suppressor online from the comfort of your home.
Suppressors (sometimes colloquially referred to as "silencers") significantly reduce the auditory report of handgun or rifle rounds, particularly when paired with subsonic ammunition. While the resulting sound is quite a bit louder than is typically portrayed in Hollywood movies, a suppressed gunshot is quiet enough to reduce the risk of hearing loss associated with unsuppressed fire.
Despite the obvious benefits, many shooters have put off buying a suppressor because they are classed as an NFA item. This means that in order to lawfully obtain a suppressor, one must file additional paperwork and pay a tax stamp before waiting for the NFA paperwork to clear. Only then can a licensed dealer transfer the suppressor, allowing the owner to take possession.
Waiting periods have typically stretched from three to six months up to an entire year (this is where the "NFA jail" meme comes from). However, with the introduction of the ATF's new electronic filing system, many shooters are able to pick up their new suppressor after only a week.
Yes. Just like purchasing a firearm, it is perfectly legal to purchase a suppressor from a licensed online dealer. The process is relatively simple and can be completed in just a few steps.
There are hundreds of traditional baffled, baffle-less, and flow-through suppressor designs available online. Your selection will depend on your individual goals and the type / caliber of firearm you are planning to suppress. Find the suppressor that works best for you and add to cart.
Next, select which local FFL / SOT location you would like the suppressor shipped to. Contact your local gun store to confirm they are willing to receive and transfer your suppressor. Finally, enter your payment details and complete the checkout process.
Create a personal account with the ATF's online filing system while your suppressor is being shipped. This will allow you to file a Form 4 and pay for your $200 tax stamp once your FFL / SOT receives your suppressor (both are required whenever you purchase a suppressor online or in person).
When filing a Form 4, you will need digital fingerprints and a passport-style photo readily available to ensure expedited processing (mailing in fingerprints may cause delays). Additionally, the Form 4 can only be submitted once your FFL / SOT is in receipt of the suppressor and they help you complete parts of the form before filing. This is because the Form 4 is specific to the serial number of your suppressor, which must be entered in the transferring dealer's bound book before paperwork is submitted.
Even with shorter processing times, you should be prepared to wait at least 1-2 weeks before you can pick up your suppressor. Be aware that your Form 4 approval could take longer if you file through a trust rather than as an individual.
Your local FFL / SOT can release your suppressor to you once your Form 4 is approved and you receive your tax stamp. Then, it's as simple as scheduling a time to stop by, pay your transfer fee to your local shop, and pick up your new suppressor!
Shopping online grants access to a wider selection of suppressors and allows for a much shorter waiting period from the time of purchase to the day you pick up your suppressor at your local gun shop. Whether you're new to the world of suppressors or simply looking for your next can, this is the fastest way to buy a suppressor in 2024.
