Are AR-Style Shotguns Worth It?

Why You Should Own An AR-12

The primary advantage of an AR-style shotgun is that it utilizes the same manual of arms as the AR-15 rifle, a platform most shooters have at least some familiarity with. Its solid ergonomics and intuitive controls carry over to the AR-12, meaning most individuals will be able to effectively operate an AR-style shotgun with minimal prior training or instruction.

When it comes to aftermarket support and shooter preference, the AR-12 is among the most customizable semi-auto shotguns available to consumers in 2024. There is a plentiful supply of standard 5 or 10-round magazines as well as high-capacity drum magazines. And of course, the AR-12 is chambered for 12 gauge shotgun shells, allowing the user to select from a wide variety of hunting and defensive loads.

Performance & Reliability

Like most modern semi-auto shotguns, the AR-12 can cycle reliably once the gun is properly set up using the manufacturer's recommended break-in procedure and ammunition type. It is also faster to load and generally has less felt recoil than tube-fed semi-autos or pump action shotguns.

AR-style shotguns are more versatile than other semi-autos, with Picatinny rails and M-LOK slots providing a simple solution for mounting optics and lights. Moreover, the right AR-12 barrel and choke combo affords the shooter more than enough accuracy for use as a defensive firearm.

AR-Style Shotguns: Definitely Worth It
